"Now we will make humans, and they will be like us. We will let them rule the fish, the birds, and all other living creatures.” So God created humans to be like himself; he made men and women. God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good! Evening came and then morning—that was the sixth day. (CEV)
Many kids are told they’re just like their parents. Before social distancing, those moments often turned awkward, because they usually came with a pinch on the cheek or an unwanted pat on the head. You stood there smiling and nodding while thinking, “This person must have bad eyesight.”
We may or may not look much like our parents, but the great thing is we are created in God’s image. What does it mean to be created in the image of God?
The answer to our question is found in Genesis 1:26-31. We were created not only to resemble God but also to think and act like God. He gave each of us the ability to display his good characteristics. Some express his kindness by giving. Others express his love by serving. And you might be one who expresses God’s faithfulness by being dependable. We call this diversity, God’s creative way of sharing all his good qualities with the whole world. When we join those qualities together to make our schools a better place, a sick friend feel better, or to clean the neighborhood, we see a more detailed picture of who God is and how he made us to be like him for those around us.
Why is it important to know that every person is created in the image of God? This helps us to understand that each of us is important to him. As a result, we see the value in everyone and love all people.
