For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV)

Have you ever been on the subway or sat on a bench in the shopping mall and watched the people around you? Have you wondered who they are and where everyone is going? Adults call this people-watching. As you looked at all the faces, did you notice that no one looks exactly the same? Everyone is different. Even with identical twins, triplets, quadruplets, and so on, small differences make each sibling entirely unique from anyone else.

The first book of the Bible, Genesis, tells the story of creation. All of us were created by God. Today’s verse, Ephesians 2:10, describes us as being God’s workmanship. God has carefully crafted you. Inside and out, he has created no one else quite like you!

Being one-of-a-kind means you are unique, but, at the same time, you are not alone. You are also part of humankind. Think about all the people you’ve seen walking through the mall, on the subway, or on a busy sidewalk. Each one is God’s unique creation, just like you. Did you know God created each of us individually to fit together as a worldwide family? That is a HUGE family!

It’s amazing to know that God planned it that way. No one is an accident or mistake; in his love for us, God deliberately designed each one of us. This means we fit together in God’s story like pieces in a giant puzzle. Being part of a huge family means we will always have someone we can help or someone who can teach us. When we help each other and learn from each other, we are showing our huge family that God is love. This is the good work he created us to do!

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for creating this world and for creating me. As I grow, help me to know how to share your love with others. I know I will make mistakes, but I will try to be thankful as I learn from them. Teach me to do what is kind and what is helpful for others because of your great love. Amen.
